01 ❥ harry potter au

YER A WIZARD, HARRY
• harry potter au! you should know how this works. if not, boom.
• comment with your character, their fandom, and the house they've been sorted to. and year, if it's applicable.
• students and adults and ghosts and visitors, oh my.
• where you wanna be is up to you! the wizarding world is your oyster. at hogwarts, in the library, at the lake, exploring the school after hours? at diagon alley, replacing your wand, buying ingredients, decided to invest in a pet? hogsmeade trying out a butterbear? on the hogswarts express to start a new year or term? wherever, whatever.
• MAGIC
• profit!!

[ With all that on his plate, his favourite class is clearly Wednesday afternoons with the Gryffindors. Just look at all these eager faces-- well, no, most of the Gryffindors are suspicious at best and terrified at worst, but Athena Cykes ain't most Gryffindors. HAND IN THE AIR-- no sorry too slow she's just going to call out. ]

Entschuldigung! Are grindylows even going to be in the exam? [ b/c they're gross. ]

Everything we've covered this term will be on the paper, Miss Cykes.

[A collective too-scared-to-be-a-groan, more-like-a-quiet-sigh comes from the rest of the class at that. Blackquill slams the coursebook down the desk, promptly making them jump out of their seats.]

Everything. We wouldn't have covered it in class if I didn't expect those dullard minds of yours to absorb it. Is that clear enough?

[ OBJECTION! She jumps with the rest but keeps going. Simply hitting your desk won't stop this crusade of learning for more than a few seconds! ]

But grindylows aren't even a common threat in this country any more! What about Shielding Charms?

[ THAT POOR COURSEBOOK look she wants to learn more about defensive spellwork and less about creepy pond creatures. Please oblige. ]

"Not a common threat", she says? Tsk, tsk. A witch in Azkaban once told me...

[Yes this is going to be another prison anecdote. Brace yourselves, class.]

...how she once saw a muggle going for a morning jog in a Yorkshire country park. As the muggle approached the pond, woosh! The demon seized the man's ankle and pulled him clean under. They didn't even find his bones afterwards, only a single trainer floating on the surface.

Or perhaps that was all balderdash, and the witch pushed him in and drowned him herself. I never did find out what she was convicted for. Hahaha!

[...Nobody else laughs.]

A... A single trainer... [ Shouldn't you be teaching us how to defend ourselves against drowning, then... ]

Doesn't the Ministry have to keep Muggle parks free of dark creatures?

I wouldn't trust the Ministry to tie their own shoes, much less ensure every Muggle region is grindylow free. 'Knowledge is power' is a popular idiom in the Ravenclaw house, and even you witless lion cubs would be wise to arm yourselves with it.

[That, and Blackquill just likes being really, really thorough. The more technical stuff will come in due time.]

Any further questions?

...

[You're not the one running the class here, Cykes. In any case, Blackquill returns to outlining the format of the exam, then explaining its, uh, unconventional set-up.]

While I will be overseeing the examination, the more practical aspects of it will be handled by Fool Bright, as usual. That includes handling the magical creatures involved, and any spellwork demonstrations necessary.

[It's a procedural necessity, but watching Fulbright struggle with dangerous creatures and having defensive spells tossed at him? Hilarity potential all on its own.]

Should anyone have any further questions, send a particularly courageous owl, and I will endeavour to reply in a timely manner. Or perhaps Taka here will indulge you, if you are too cowardly to take the risk... [He grins, as ever rounding off the class on a grim note.] That is all for today.

[ She's here to stop you intimidating the rest of the class into gibbering wrecks incapable of learning, Professor. Simple.

Athena busies herself taking notes, though the prospect of an exam where her examiner is as lax as Auror Fulbrigh-- oh, never mind. No scrounging for better grades for her after all. Siiiiigh.

IN ANY CASE Muggle Studies isn't for another hour, and Fulbright is still dozing next to the door, so once the classroom is emptying out... ]

S-sir! Did you get my owl last week?

[ actually it's Apollo's owl but who cares. ]

[personal profile] shacklebreaker 2014-05-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Blackquill is in no hurry to disturb Fulbright; any time spent out of his cell is time well spent. If he notices Athena loitering behind initially, he doesn't make any effort to acknowledge her, gathering the stack of homework handed in for the class for grading. Taka is preening himself on his shoulder.

When she asks that question, he looks up and fixes her with a sharp stare.]

... I did. You should cease sending them. There are only so many packages Fool Bright will be willing to smuggle past the Dementors. [Privately, he's grateful. But he's also aware of how extremely inappropriate it is for a student to be sending a convicted murderer gifts of any kind. The Ministry would be scandalised, for one.]
